Description of the habitat
Molinia meadows are herb-rich and blossomy hay meadows. They occur on wet-dry to wet, nutrient-low soils. Unstable soil moisture is a requirement for the occurrence of this type of meadow and can be led back to temporary water logging and regular desiccating of the clayey soils. The nutrient poverty is crucial as well. The Molinia spec. is eponymous and characteristic. Furthermore, plants which only blossom in mid and high summer are defining.
Situation and endangerment of the habitat in the project-area
Molinia meadows occur only rarely in Luxembourg. Small gatherings can be found in the south-west as well as in the east of the country. The main impairment of the latter lies within the intensification of agriculture. Fertilisation, early and abundant cuts, high livestock density and drainage lead to the loss of the habitat.
Provisions within the project
Purchase of 1 ha. Extensification of the use and, if needed, renaturing of the meadows and resettlement of highly endangered plant species.
